Man is SINFUL
"For all have done wrong and are far from the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23 BBE)
Man was created to be in fellowship with God, but was tempted and fell away from that relationship. This state is shown by either indifference to the will of God or active rebellion. This is the SIN that the Bible means.

Man is SEPARATED from God
"For the reward of sin is death;"--spiritual separation from God (Romans 6:23 BBE)
If you are separate form God by sin then you cannot know God's plan or experience His love for you. Just living a "good life" is no use whatsoever in trying to reach God and the promise of life eternal .
